Term 1

Welcome to our fifth class blog!

These past few months have been extremely busy for us..

We have been running a marathon for MarathonKids. Every day (when it wasn’t raining) we were going outside and running laps of our new field. We will be doing the final mile in Santry stadium with a load of other schools.

We also entered a competition where we created monsters.. we are still waiting on the results so fingers crossed for us!

Whoever in fifth class wanted to also walked down to Lucan Presbyterian Church to listen to and ask questions about life back in the 1950’s. A huge thanks to all the kind people that came to talk to us and gave us biscuits and juice after.

We had our assembly at the start of October. We talked about mental health and friendship. We reenacted the story of The Good Samaritan.

After this, we had a mental health awareness day in school. We all wore bright colours and socks. We mixed with another class and all  made feathers. We also had an assembly where we learnt about mindfulness.

We had two very successful fluffy Fridays where we wore in our fluffies and got to watch a movie with the other class for golden time.

Another of the days we watched Ireland WIN against Russia in the rugby. We were the loudest supporters in the school..

For Halloween we dressed up and had a disco. We made vampire teeth and learnt a poem. We went trick or treating to the other classrooms and got some more treats.

In English, we wrote some Autumn acrostic poems and some Halloween poetry. We are having a great time reading Wonder. We also wrote some spooky short Halloween stories.

In Irish we learnt about Mé Féin  and also Bia. We also have our house cups again and are going to try and speak more Irish to get some more tokens for our group to win.

In Maths we covered place value, data, long multiplication and have also started learning our long division. Ms Smith is very impressed at how quickly we are understanding long division… a bit more practise and we will have it!

In  SESE (History, Science and Geography) we have covered loads of topics. We learnt about King Midas and his magic touch. We also learnt about the Ancient Romans and Pompeii. We all made a mini-project about a woman who made a difference in history and learnt about Rosa Parks, Amelia Earhart and Anne Frank. One of us even had a project about our own great great great aunt!  We also learnt about different buildings and settlements, plants and mountains. We have been working very hard on our Aztec projects and will be presenting them to the class in November. We already had a group kindly bring us in some Aztec hot chocolate to try. (It was very yum!)

For drama, we did our assembly and also did some freeze frames of Romans. We have played some drama games like Bang, Bing Bong Name, Chinese Whispers etc.

We learnt two songs; try everything and also Higher than the sky.

For PE we had swimming. We really enjoyed this. We also learnt the rules of Olympic Handball. We have played Killer Ball, football and basketball.

In Art, we were also very busy. First we made a booklet and wrote out each of the elements of art. We painted self-portraits and made pictures using just a black dot. We also made hot air balloon perspective pictures with some famous landmarks. We used chalk and made our own stencils to create a night skyline. We also made some Roman     mosaics and some Aztec suns in pairs                                                                                                                                             thumbnail_img_20191024_121154 thumbnail_img_20191024_120910_bokeh thumbnail_img_20191024_120919_bokeh thumbnail_img_20191024_121024_bokeh thumbnail_img_20190926_130958

We have worked really hard and Ms. Smith is super proud of us.

We are looking forward to all the Christmas excitement ahead of us! Keep checking in 🙂
