After a very tense playoff and a semi final last week our 6th class girls got through to the final of the girls primary school Division 1 hockey league last Tuesday 19th at Three Rock Rovers H.C. This is the first time in history that a girls team got through to the final of a Division 1 league. This is the highest level of hockey at this age group and we are all very proud that the girls got this far.
Our opponents, Wesley Junior school were up for it and so were we but unfortunately we lost the match 2-1 . The girls played an outstanding, skillful, high tempo game of hockey.
It was 0- 0 at half time but the girls had lots of shots on goal ; in particular 2 amazing strikes on goal one from Merize Jonker and Annabell Van Zly. Wesley’s keeper managed to make 2 very good saves. Emma Williamson scored the first goal in the first 5 minutes of second half from a lovely pass into the circle and she got a touch to it and pushed it past the goal keeper. Wesley then scored another to equalise.
It was nip and tuck right up to the final 2 minutes when Wesley managed to score a goal.
It was a super match and the girls played their hearts out. They were presented with silver medals and Merize, the captain, made a speech to thank the opposition and everyone involved with this outstanding bunch of girls.
Onwards and Upwards to all the girls. They have made sporting history at St Andrews and we are all incredibly proud of them!
